    The response of tropical rainforests to drought : lessons from recent research and future prospects

    Key message: we review the recent findings on the influence of drought on tree mortality, growth or ecosystem functioning in tropical rainforests. Drought plays a major role in shaping tropical rainforests and the response mechanisms are highly diverse and complex. The numerous gaps identified here require the international scientific community to combine efforts in order to conduct comprehensive studies in tropical rainforests on the three continents. These results are essential to simulate the future of these ecosystems under diverse climate scenarios and to predict the future of the global earth carbon balance. - Context: tropical rainforest ecosystems are characterized by high annual rainfall. Nevertheless, rainfall regularly fluctuates during the year and seasonal soil droughts do occur. Over the past decades, a number of extreme droughts have hit tropical rainforests, not only in Amazonia but also in Asia and Africa. The influence of drought events on tree mortality and growth or on ecosystem functioning (carbon and water fluxes) in tropical rainforest ecosystems has been studied intensively, but the response mechanisms are complex.- Aims: herein, we review the recent findings related to the response of tropical forest ecosystems to seasonal and extreme droughts and the current knowledge about the future of these ecosystems. - Results: this review emphasizes the progress made over recent years and the importance of the studies conducted under extreme drought conditions or in through-fall exclusion experiments in understanding the response of these ecosystems. It also points to the great diversity and complexity of the response of tropical rainforest ecosystems to drought. - Conclusion: the numerous gaps identified here require the international scientific community to combine efforts in order to conduct comprehensive studies in tropical forest regions. These results are essential to simulate the future of these ecosystems under diverse climate scenarios and to predict the future of the global earth carbon balance

    Bilan des améliorations et de la production des ressources fourragères introduites en milieu paysan sahélien : Cas de Yakouta (Burkina Faso)

    Pour établir le bilan des améliorations et de la production des ressources fourragères introduites en milieu paysan sahélien, une enquête a été conduite dans le village de Yakouta. Une dizaine de structures d’appui au développement a été inventoriée et les technologies introduites ont été regroupées en cinq thèmes principaux (la culture fourragère, la fauche et la conservation du fourrage naturel, la technique de conservation etd’utilisation de sous produits agricoles, des gousses de ligneux et la régénération du pâturage naturel) Le thème qui a connu une plus grande adhésion a été la régénération du pâturage naturel (97,70 % de l’effectif). La succession de plusieurs structures développant les mêmes thèmes a permis de former un nombre important de producteurs. Le taux d’adoption est lié à l’intérêt du producteur et à l’environnement financier quipermettent d’adopter la technologie. Les femmes se sont montrées plus aptes dans l’activité d’embouche à (80,95 %), dans l’utilisation des sous-produits agro-industriels (81 %) et les hommes dans la récolte et utilisation des gousses de ligneux, la fauche et conservation dufourrage et construction des fenils. Le soutien des institutions financières et des ONGs a été un élément important dans l’adoption des technologies.Selon les producteurs, l’absence d’une structure de production et de distribution des semences fourragères, la faiblesse de services après ventes du matériel ont été des facteurs limitant l’adoption des technologies. Les pesanteurs sociologiques et l’absence ou lafaiblesse des structures organisationnelles constituent aussi un frein à l’introduction et l’utilisation des technologies.Mots clés : Bilan, technologie introduite, adoption, Sahel

    Multi-Actors' Co-Implementation of Climate-Smart Village Approach in West Africa: Achievements and Lessons Learnt

    Climate change and variability are significant challenges for the environment and food security worldwide. Development strategies focusing simultaneously on adaptive farming, productivity, and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions-known as climate-smart agriculture (CSA) strategies-are key to responding to these challenges. For almost a decade, within the framework of Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), World Agroforestry (ICRAF), and its partners have been using Participatory Action Research (PAR) to fully engage key stakeholders in co-creating such CSA development strategies. This includes the testing of Agricultural Research for Development (AR4D) CSA scalability options. The multidisciplinary teams include the National Research and Extension Systems (NARES), national meteorological services (NMS), non-profit organizations (NGOs), and local radio programs, among others. The CCAFS-West Africa Program, World Agroforestry-West and Central Africa (ICRAF-WCA), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), University of Reading, and Centre Régional de Formation et d'Application en Agro-météorologie et Hydrologie Opérationnelle (AGRHYMET) provide technical backstopping to the national teams. Climate information (CI) was used as an entry point to inform the development of CSA technologies and practices within Climate-Smart Villages (CSV). This groundwork has led to a greater understanding of three critical factors for successful CSV implementation: (1) Building strong partnerships to co-design and develop agricultural systems that improve ecosystem and population resilience, (2) Key stakeholders (researchers, farmers, development agents, and students) capacity strengthening through vocational and academic training, and (3) Using CI for livelihood planning at all scales. These three factors support more effective identification and testing of agricultural technologies and practices addressing climate variability and change at plot, community, and landscape levels. This paper discusses the PAR-CSA methodology and parameters for evaluation, including biophysical and social change. Keys to success, including communication, knowledge sharing tools, and scalability are also discussed. Finally, future opportunities for improvement are presented, including knowledge product development, CSA policy and investment planning, capacity building, further engagement of the private sector, and additional research on existing practices and tools

    The role of a molecular informatics platform to support next generation risk assessment

    Chemoinformatics has been successfully employed in safety assessment through various regulatory programs for which information from databases, as well as predictive methodologies including computational methods, are accepted. One example is the European Union Cosmetics Products Regulations, for which Cosmetics Europe (CE) research activities in non-animal methods have been managed by the Long Range Science Strategy (LRSS) program. The vision is to use mechanistic aspects of existing non-animal methods, as well as New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), to demonstrate that safety assessment of chemicals can be performed using a combination of in silico and in vitro data. To this end, ChemTunes•ToxGPS® has been adopted as the foundation of the safety assessment system and provides a platform to integrate data and knowledge, and enable toxicity predictions and safety assessments, relevant to cosmetics industries. The ChemTunes•ToxGPS® platform provides chemical, biological, and safety data based both on experiments and predictions, and an interactive/customizable read-across platform. The safety assessment workflow enables users to compile qualified data sources, quantify their reliabilities, and combine them using a weight of evidence approach based on decision theory. The power of this platform was demonstrated through a use case to perform a safety assessment for Perilla frutescens through the workflows of threshold of toxicological concern (TTC), in silico predictions (QSAR and structural rules) and quantitative read-across (qRAX) assessment for overall safety. The system digitalizes workflows within a knowledge hub, exploiting advanced in silico tools in this age of artificial intelligence. The further design of the system for next generation risk assessment (NGRA) is scientifically guided by interactions between the workgroup and international regulatory entities
